Without adjusting the MAF scaling to reflect the changes to the intake, the ECU will constantly mis-calculate the amount of air entering the engine.

Dec 28, 2018 · Mass Air Flow Meter To properly gauge how much fuel to inject at any given moment, the engine control module (ECM) needs to know how much air is coming into the air intake system. Most vehicles use a mass air flow meter (MAF) for this purpose, while others use a manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor , usually located on the intake manifold.
The most obvious difference is the lack of mass air flow (MAF) sensor in the 90-92 setups. Instead, a manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor is used to measure engine load (basically, engine vacuum). Likewise, the 85-89 setups do not use a MAP sensor. These used a mass air flow sensor to calculate air being drawn into the engine.
